How To Keep Your Hair Healthy This Summer
Summertime means long days swimming in the pool, laying out on the beach, and spending days in the sun - all extremely fun for you, but not necessarily for your hair. Harsh summer conditions can actually wreck havoc on our tresses, causing major damage like breakage, dryness, and split ends. Luckily, there are some things you can do to help protect your hair and ensure it stays healthy this season.
Use Quality Products
The products you use play a huge part in how your hair reacts throughout a season. If you're using cheap products to wash and treat your hair, you're going to see cheap results. That's why I always advocate purchasing quality products because you're so much more likely to get amazing results. I'm a huge fan of the Dove Intensive Repair collection to help repair and nourish my locks. I use both the shampoo and conditioner, and together they make my hair incredibly healthy. It usually gets pretty dry and flat during this season from the heat, but with this duo it feels silky soft and has so much bounce to it. What I love most about this collection is that not only does it help repair any damage your hair already has, but it also works to stop 90% of damage before it even happens.
Think Before You Brush
Brushing can actually be really damaging if done too much or improperly. You never want to brush your hair when it's soaking wet because it can cause breakage from ripping through tangles. The best thing to do is to let your hair fully air dry before brushing, and to use a large comb to gently pick out tangles. If you insist on brushing your hair right out of the shower or pool, invest in a brush specifically designed for getting out tangles and being used on wet hair. Also, go easy on the brushing - too much can actually do more damage than good.
Stay Out Of The Sun
It may seem surprising, but sun damage doesn't stop at our skin. Your hair can get burned too, and the resulting damage can last a really long time. What happens is that UV rays burn away at the hair cuticle, causing frizziness, dry strands, split and brittle ends, and discoloration, and this is made even worse when your hair is soaked in pool water...yikes! Keep your hair protected by keeping the sun off of it as much as possible. Things like wearing a hat, using an umbrella or parasol, or staying in the shade are all options that will help majorly in the long run.
