My Blogging Process

My Blogging Process | A Girl, Obsessed

I often get asked about my blogging process, questions like how do I come up with new post ideas? How do I take my photos? What do I do to promote my blog and get my posts seen? So, I decided to write up a big post sharing my whole process, from start to finish.

Content Ideas

I always make sure to have my phone with me at all times, so that when an idea for a blog post pops into my head I can jot it down in my OneNote App. I have a folder in this app specifically for post ideas, as well as a folder for photo ideas (and ideas for future videos once I start filming again). Content ideas can strike at any time - sometimes I'll think of a new post topic while I'm browsing Pinterest, reading a self-help book, or watching Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.

Editorial Calendar

Towards the end of each month, I like to plan out my content for the following month. I use the Google Calendar app on all of my devices so no matter which one I'm on, I can easily see what my blog schedule looks like for the next few days/weeks. Scheduling everything out also gives me a better view of my posts, so I'm less likely to share similar posts back-to-back. While I fully believe in the power of a good editorial calendar, I'm not overly strict once everything is planned out. If I think up a really killer post idea in the middle of the month, I'll add it in and just reschedule the post I originally had planned for a different day. Being flexible is really important to me so I don't feel creatively stifled or stuck in a box. Too many rules and restrictions can be a bad thing.

Photography + Editing

Once I know what blog posts are coming up for the following week, I take a day over the weekend and photograph everything for that week's posts. This way, when it comes time for me to write the article, I don't have to worry about if I have the proper photos or not. Some weeks I'll sit and edit all of the photos in one go, and other weeks I'll edit a post's photos the night before while I'm writing the copy - it all depends on how much time I have to get ahead. For editing, I use Photoshop to do 99% of my editing. I'm completely self-taught, and have been trying to learn more about photo editing to really make my pictures stand out.

Copywriting + Editing

When it comes to writing my blog posts, I like to do this late at night. It's when I'm able to do my best work - no one to bother me, nowhere to be, just me and my laptop, with headphones on listening to my latest playlist. Pure perfection. Once I've written the post, I'll go back over and re-read it, check for any grammar mistakes, and take out anything that doesn't sound right or  improve upon something I've already written. Then I'll click the little spellcheck button and make sure I didn't miss any misspelled words. After that, I'll pop in my photos, add my title/tags/search description, and schedule the post for the day I want it to go live.

Promoting Posts + Social Media

After a post has gone live, I want to promote it and get it out to my audience without coming across as spammy. I also want to get the most bang for my buck when sharing my post, so I don't post links to it on all of my social media platforms at the same time - instead, I spread it out through the day so it has a better chance of reaching more people. When the post goes live, I have Squarespace set up to auto-share it to Twitter and Facebook, later I share a photo from the post on Instagram and invite people to check it out, and then throughout the day I'll pin it to a Pinterest board or two.

And there you have it! My entire blogging process, from coming up with content ideas to publishing and promoting my posts. If you have any other questions, feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll try to answer them in a future post!
