The Makeup Edit | January

A year or two ago, I used to share the contents of my makeup bag each month and it’s something I’ve really been wanting to start doing again. Since I’m on a strict spending ban for the year, I thought bringing this series back would be a great way to push me to “shop my stash” each month to create a new makeup bag roundup, keeping things fresh for myself so I’m not as tempted to shop for new things as well as allowing me to really use up what I already have. My January makeup edit includes a lot of creamy, dewy products that I’ve been loving lately, as well as some gorgeous pops of pinky nude and mauve.

My skin has been particularly dry this winter, so I’ve been reaching for all things hydrating and creamy. Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer is what I always start my daily makeup out with because it’s the perfect primer to smooth out and hydrate my complexion for makeup. For my base, I’ve been using a mixture of two foundations – The Ordinary’s Coverage Foundation in 1.0N and the NYX Total Control Drop Foundation in Alabaster. These two products combined  create the perfect winter base for me. It’s light enough for my complexion (because I’m pale AF during this time of year), plus the two together create a really nice finish that’s both high coverage as well as slightly dewy.

My concealer of choice this month is Tarte’s Shape Tape in Fair. I was able to finally get my hands on this after Christmas, and have been completely obsessed with it ever since. It rivals my love for the NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer for sure. To set my concealer and anywhere I tend to get a little oily, I’ve been using Glossier’s Wowder in Light/Medium along with their Wowder Brush to apply it. I picked this duo up at the beginning of December and have really been loving it because it’s so lightweight but really keeps everything in place all day long. Since it’s winter and I usually go for a more dewy look, I don’t dust it all over my face but I definitely will start doing that in the summer months when the weather is particularly hot.

I like to keep the rest of my base products as dewy and radiant as possible to give my skin a nice glow. I’ve been using Fenty Beauty’s Match Stix Matte Skinstick in Amber to contour. This product blends out beautifully and the cool tone really achieves the illusion of shadows which is perfect for adding depth to the hollows of the cheeks. My go-to highlighter is Glossier’s Haloscope in Quartz – a gorgeous champagne pearl glow that makes your skin glisten with an almost wet-like sheen. For my cheeks, I’ve been using the NARS Dual-Intensity Blush in Fervor. I really love this blush for winter because the darker rose shade gives you that “just in from the cold” flushed look, and then the lighter pink shade can bee added to the apples of the cheeks for a nice pop of color.

I really love cool tone makeup, especially for this time of year. I’ve been going with neutral to cool tone colors for my eyes lately, and Tarte’s Tartelette Palette has been absolutely perfect for this. All of the shades in the palette are gorgeous, and there’s the perfect amount of colors to create pretty much any look I could ever want. I’ve been a bit obsessed with it and it’s been in my makeup bag ever since last month (and probably won’t be going anywhere soon). I’ve been skipping liner lately, instead smoking my eyes out a bit with eyeshadow and then going straight to mascara. The one I’ve been using this month has been Tarte’s Maneater Mascara. I picked this up after reading some rave reviews on a few different blogs, and I have to say so far I’m really enjoying it. I wouldn’t go so far as to claim it’s my new favorite, but it definitely deserves Top 10 status. For brows, I’m still using my good ol’ standby, Boy Brow. Glossier clearly hit it out of the park with this product, and I don’t see myself using anything else for awhile as it perfectly fills in and shapes my brows while still allowing them to look natural.

My lip color of choice this month (and every month, honestly) is a nice pinky nude. For a hydrating option, I’ve been using the YSL Oil-In-Stick Lipstick in 44 Nude Lavalliere. This color is a gorgeous brown-toned pink that looks beautiful for everyday wear, plus the formula is nice and hydrating which works quick well for the season. If I’m wanting something a little more matte, I’ve been reaching for the NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Stockholm, which is a nice nude shade with just a hint of pink. I’ve really been loving this lip cream lately, to the point where I’ve already picked up a few different shades to test out (all with Christmas money, so it doesn’t go against my spending ban). A little trick I’ve been doing lately is applying some of the Glossier Lip Gloss over top of the lip cream when I want a glossy version instead of the matte. Stockholm is one of those shades that looks amazing both ways so I’m able to have options.

What are you keeping in your makeup bag this month?

I love this post! This is such a great idea to use up different products in your collection without having to go and buy new products similar to ones you already have! It really makes you use different products in your collection and remember why you brought them in the first place! I’m defiantly going to start doing this with my collection!
Your photos are stunning too btw! Great post 😍
