One of the really cool perks of running a blog is definitely collaborating with brands. You’ll get the opportunity to work with different companies from time to time, and it can almost feel like a dream come true when a brand you’re especially in love with reaches out to work together. This isn’t a topic I see talked about very often in the blogging community, so I thought I would share things I’ve learned from my own collaborations over the past few years.
Simple Tips For Collaborating With Brands
Make sure all details are laid out and agreed upon before starting any campaign | Before beginning any campaign or partnership, make sure you are clear about all details, requirements, and expectations. You’ll most likely have to sign a digital contract, so be aware of what’s expected of you and that you can deliver all necessary documents on time.
Conduct yourself in a professional way | Being a blogger is no excuse for sloppy emails and unprofessional actions. Be mindful when responding to brands – try to refrain from using improper grammar, internet slang, and emojis. Treat all collaborations as business deals and behave accordingly.
Stay on top of all deadlines and make sure to submit necessary documents on time | Nothing looks more unprofessional than missing deadlines or forgetting to turn in posts on time. Once you receive your deadlines, make sure to write them down in your planner, calendar, or somewhere where you’ll be reminded of them often.
Create a media kit | A media kit is a document that includes all of your stats, traffic, and important information about your blog. When companies contact you about potential collaborations and are interested in more details about your site, this is the perfect thing to send to them so that not only see your stats, but also know you mean business. Sophie has a great post on how to create a killer media kit for your blog, and I definitely recommend checking it out.
Only partner with companies and promotions that fit your blog and that you feel comfortable working with | This is something that I am very passionate about. If you start accepting every random collaboration that comes your way, it’s going to make the focus of your blog very messy and will make you look like you’ll do anything for a buck. If you’re saying yes to sponsored posts just for the money or free merchandise, your readers will be able to tell and you can start losing followers fast. I’m very picky when it comes to who I’ll work with, and I think it’s best to only say yes to brands that you’ve used in the past, that you love, or that you believe fit in well with your blog and that your readers will be interested in. It can be tempting to say yes to a bunch of free stuff or cash, but is it worth it if you lose your credibility?
Don’t sell yourself (and your hard work!) short | Regardless of what some say, blogging does take a lot of hard work. Taking product photos, editing said photos, writing up a post that not only features the company and their product(s) but also stays true to your voice and style, promoting the post, staying in touch with the company and adhering to all deadlines…it all adds up and can be very time consuming, especially if you’re also juggling school, a full-time job, a family (or all three!). Make sure that you’re not giving your services away for free. Decide on what your terms of payment are (free product, monetary payment, or maybe both) and stick to those terms. Most companies are really good about giving you fair payment, but occasionally you’ll meet one that will try to get all sorts of things out of you, like social shoutouts and blog posts, without giving you anything in return. Don’t sell yourself short – you work hard, and deserve to get paid.
