The Benefits Of Unplugging

Though I’m about as addicted to social media and being online as the next person, I must admit that taking some time off every once in awhile to unplug and be present in the now can be so invigorating, not only for the mind but also the soul. It’s a little too easy to get caught up with the need to be on social media 24/7 (Rhianna shared 21 Signs You’re Addicted Social Media, and I pretty much relate to all of them).

Taking a break from being online, even for just a few hours, can be a great refresher for your mind and get you out of that rut you might’ve been in. It allows you to refocus and come back stronger than before, with a fresh mindset and (hopefully) less stress. I think it’s important for our generation to get into the habit of regularly unplugging, just for the simple fact that being so connected to what we’re all doing is causing more harm than good. Comparison, jealousy, self-doubt…a lot of these things are bred, in my opinion, from being overly exposed to each other. It’s as the saying goes, “Too much of a good thing can be bad.”

When unplugging, you might be a little lost as to what you should do with your free time. I’m definitely a workaholic, and have a very hard time not working on something blog-related. That’s why I have to force myself to unplug at least once a week, and here are the different things I usually do:

  • Have a pamper night (bubble bath included)
  • Read a book or magazine
  • Organize my office space, makeup table, or closet
  • Study my Bible
  • Take a walk around my neighborhood
  • Go out shopping or to grab a bite to eat
  • Spend some time working on something crafty, like decorating my planner for the week or crocheting/knitting
  • Watch a movie I’ve never seen before
  • Meditate and practice breathing exercises to de-stress
  • Have a family board game night
  • Journal my thoughts for the day
