3 No-Fail Ways To De-Stress

Life can get really crazy sometimes. What with work, school, relationships, finances, politics, social issues, and daily responsibilities, it’s a wonder we’re all able to keep it together. Stress is something that most of us deal with on a daily basis, and it can actually be really harmful to our health and mental wellbeing. I try my best to remain as positive and upbeat as possible, but there are definitely those days (and sometimes weeks) where I have to rely on a few no-fail techniques to help relieve the stress.

Tune Out The World

I think the quickest and easiest way to de-stress is by unplugging. When I’m feeling overwhelmed, I like to turn off all of my electronics and focus on really being in the moment. This can be anything from heading outside for a stroll and some fresh air to curling up on the couch with my latest read. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you don’t have any way to get notifications or to check things like social media and emails.

Focus On Yourself

Practicing self love is extremely important, especially when you’re feeling stressed out. If you’re the type of person that constantly tries to appease others, you’re going to spread yourself too thin, and that can lead to feeling burnt out and unfulfilled. Make sure to regularly take time out for yourself – take a nice bubble bath, treat yourself to a quite lunch at your favorite restaurant, or give yourself the afternoon off to just relax and not have to worry about sticking to a schedule.

Take It Slow

Sometimes life can become super overwhelming, and it can feel like everything is moving too fast. When this happens, I like to literally slow down. I’ll take 30-60 minutes, and do a few meditation exercises that help me calm everything down. First, I’ll make sure it’s nice and cool in my apartment. Then I’ll put on some soft, calming music, find a comfortable place to sit down, and focus on centering myself. Breathing exercises are great for this (breathe in for 4, hold for 4, breathe out for 7), as well as physically making your movements simple and slower. One thing that helps me clear my mind is visualizing myself floating on my back in the middle of a still lake. There’s just something about this mental image that helps me to feel weightless and at peace.
