I think all ladies, beauty enthusiasts especially, can agree that a proper skincare routine is vital to healthy, glowing skin. When I first became interested in makeup and beauty, I was kind of lost in terms of skincare. There are just so many products out there for different skin concerns and it can get a bit confusing. Did I have oily skin or dry skin? Redness problems? Should I start thinking about anti-aging? What is a serum and do I need one? It took me doing a lot of research online and watching quite a few skincare videos on Youtube to figure out what I should invest in and in what steps each item should be used. I feel pretty confident in my knowledge of skincare, as well as being well-versed in the different skin types and products that will benefit each, so I’ve decided to put together a little step-by-step guide to help you create a skincare routine designed specifically for your skin.
Step 1: Figuring Out Your Skin Type
This may seem like a difficult step to start out with, but it’s essential to creating the perfect routine for your face. It’s really easy to figure out if you know your skin pretty well, and if you don’t, just doing a little bit of research will help you determine which category your skin falls under. Many websites have little quizzes you can take to see which skin type you have, and all it takes is answering a few simple questions. Quick and easy!
Step 2: Picking A Cleanser
Now that you know your skin type (fun fact: mine is combination), it’s time to pick out the first step of your routine – a cleanser. This will be the first item you use, both in the morning to clean you skin and again at night to remove any makeup and sweat/dirt. Depending on your skin type, you’ll want to look for a cleanser that will benefit your skin. Is your type oily and acne-prone? Look for an oil-free cleanser that contains salicylic acid to help fight breakouts. Dry skin? Look for something moisturizing, like a cream-based cleanser or a cleansing oil. Sensitive skin? You’ll want to be careful what you use on your skin and always look for formulas made specifically for sensitive skin.
Step 3: Toning
Once you’ve cleansed your face, it’s time to tone (you’ll do this both morning and night). For oily and combination skin types, a good toner like witch hazel would work perfect. For dry and sensitive skin types, you’ll want to use a light toner that is alcohol free. Dry types might even consider something more hydrating like a cleansing lotion or hydrating mist. Remember, whatever toner you choose, it should not hurt your skin or feel uncomfortable. If a toner makes your skin burn, it’s probably too strong for your skin type or it’s not made with good ingredients.
Step 4: Moisturize
This step is a must for supple, healthy skin. Every skin type, even oily, needs to moisturize morning and night. Now, there are two different types of moisturizers to use. In the morning, go for a daily facial moisturizer that has an SPF. People with oilier skin should opt for a lighter lotion or hydrating gel. Dry skinned gals, go for something thicker and more moisturizing. At nighttime, you can use your daily moisturizer, OR you can try a night cream. Night creams are good for adding tons of hydration to your face so you can wake up to seriously soft skin. There are also night creams you can get that offer help for specific concerns, like redness, dark spots, or anti-aging. Get one that works for your skin and can help with whatever issues you might be worried about.
Step 5: Eye Cream
You might not think you need to worry about an eye cream until you’re much older, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Taking care of the skin around your eyes now will help prevent wrinkles, sagging, and signs of aging in the future. Eye creams, like night creams, can also help remedy certain issues you may have, like dark circles or puffiness. Choose an eye cream that will work for your needs, and make sure to gently apply it with your ring finger to avoid stretching or pulling the skin around your eyes and causing premature wrinkles.
Bonus Products: Treatments + Extras
- Exfoliators | A couple times a week, use a gentle exfoliator to remove dead skin cells and reveal fresh, glowing, younger-looking skin. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to only exfoliate once a week so you don’t aggravate your skin. Also, use a gentler exfoliator, like a bead or oatmeal one, instead of something harsher like sugar.
- Cream masks, sheet masks, peel-off masks, etc | It’s a great idea to use different masks a few times a week to refresh your skin and give yourself a little relaxing “me time”. Charcoal and mint mud masks are great for sucking everything out of your pores, sheet masks work well for hydrating and evening skin tones, and peel-off masks remove dead skin and brighten the complexion. There are even masks to help calm redness and soothe aggravated skin.
- Serums | For more problematic skin concerns, serums can be your best friend. Serums, because of their smaller molecules and concentrated nutrients, are able to go into deeper layers of skin and really help repair your skin. They combat a variety of issues, from acne to anti-aging to redness to uneven skin tones. Choose one you think will work well for you and use it after toning and before moisturizing.
- Lip Scrubs | A gentle lip scrub used a few times a week will ensure soft, kissable lips. If you don’t want to invest in a brand-name lip scrub, you can always mix a little sugar, honey, and olive oil to make a quick and easy DIY scrub. Don’t forget, always follow up with a good lip balm!
