A classic red lip is a must for the holiday season. While I don’t usually wear red lipstick regularly, it’s something I like to break out for certain events. Seeing as Christmastime is the ultimate special occasion, it’s no wonder that I rock a red lip more often during this time of year. Finding the right shade takes a little bit of trial and error though, as the perfect Christmas red is neither too blue or too orange.
My holiday makeup usually consists of glittery champagne eyes, a subtle black wing, dewy skin, and red lips. I decided to go through my makeup collection and pull out every red lip color I own to find the perfect shade for the season. Some shades, like Clinique’s Pop Lip Colour in Poppy Pop and Colourpop’s Ultra Blotted Lip Color in Bit-O Sunny, are gorgeous but run a little too orange to be considered a true Christmas red. I love orange-reds for summertime (they look amazing with a tan), but for the winter I try to wear reds that are more “true” with a bit of a blue undertone. I have Revlon’s Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Fatal Apple, which is a gorgeous candy apple red, but it’s not quite deep enough for what I was looking for and I much prefer matte/demi-matte lips for the holidays instead of glossy.
After knocking those shades off my list, that left me with two options. The first was the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella, a bold scarlet red that is a bit of a cult favorite in the beauty world. The other was MAC’s Russian Red, which is a gorgeous bold red with slight bluish undertones. Both shades are absolutely beautiful reds, but after swatching them both I found that the MAC offering just seemed to suit my skin a little better. Cruella runs a tad bit more blue than Russian Red, and since my skin tone is neutral and doesn’t lean too warm or too cold, I felt that the MAC shade was a better choice for my holiday look.
