The Autumn Lip Edit

Every time autumn rolls around, I pull all of my favorite seasonal lip colors to the front of my makeup drawers so they can be used as much as possible. There are certain colors I especially love wearing during this time of year, from rosy nudes and muted taupes to dark berries and shimmering rose golds. This year, I’ve put together the perfect little assortment of lip products to achieve every autumn look my heart could desire.

Prepped & Primed

Of course, no lip look can be created without a properly primed canvas. I tend to scrub my lips more often during this time of year to combat the added dryness that cold weather brings, and to ensure they stay as hydrated as possible I’ve been using Glossier’s Balm Dotcom in Birthday. This balm is incredibly nourishing for the lips and has quickly become one of my all time favorites from Glossier. Plus, the birthday cake scent is a rather nice treat for the nose.

My go-to lip colors for autumn are always neutrals. I like to be a little adventurous every now and then, but I just can pass up a good nude or taupe. Right now, I’ve been loving glosses for a bit of shine and hydration. I finally picked up the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb and have become completely obsessed with it. The color is a universal nude shade that literally looks good on everyone, plus it’s such a buttery gloss and feels absolutely heavenly on the lips. Another gloss I always love for autumn is Maybelline’s Color Elixir Lip Gloss in Caramel Infused. This rosy caramel shade looks incredibly flattering on the lips and compliments most makeup looks, so it’s really easy to work with. My final neutral lip pick for the season is the Tootsi Lippie Stix and Lip Pencil duo from ColourPop. I love a good greige for the fall. These two paired together create the perfect matte lip that lasts for ages and has a nice 90s grunge look to it.

Even though the seasons have changed and colors have gotten a bit darker, I still can’t part with my beloved color pink. To compromise, I switch to more of a dirty pink shade during this time of year and it actually works quite well for the season. The Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment in Bloom* has been getting a lot of love from me lately – it’s a gorgeous mauve pink shade and as always, the Fresh lip balms are so hydrating so they’re the perfect beauty bit for dry lip season. Another hydrating option that I’ve really been loving is Clinique’s Pop Lip Colour + Primer in Plum Pop. This is a nice plummy pink shade that is extremely easy to wear because it already has a primer built into the formula (perfect for anyone who suffers from dry lips). When I’m just wanting a basic lipstick for the day, the NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien is what I’ve been using to create an effortless rose pink pout. I got a sample of this a year or two ago for my birthday gift from Sephora, and have been gently using it so I can get as much out of it as possible.

Now for the berries! I love a good berry shade for autumn. They’re a fun way to add some color to your look, while still being perfectly in sync with the season. My sheer berry pick for this year is MAC’s Plumful – this lipstick is so fun to wear because you can wear it sheer or build it up for a medium finish that’s still nice and glossy. If I’m wanting more of a matte look, I’ll reach for Colourpop’s Ultra Blotted Lip in Split for a berry pout. I’m a huge fan of these matte lipsticks. They work more like a stain, giving the lips that just-ate-a-popsicle look and can easily be built up to look fully opaque. This shade is a nice bright berry color that looks so beautiful paired with a smoky champagne eye and neutral blush.

What are your lip picks for this season?
