Adventures In Cooking

One of my main goals for the year is to start cooking more for myself and trying new recipes. When I first moved out, I fell into the trap of cheap frozen meals and instant noodles. While certainly easy on the wallet, they’re made with horrible ingredients and so horrible for the body. In an attempt to focus more on my health and wellbeing, I’ve decided that this is going to be the year that I really delve into cooking nutritious and wholesome meals. I picked up a new cookbook (the first for my little home) called Sunday Suppers by Karen Mordechai. What made me choose this cookbook is how simple and pure the recipes sound. No crazy ingredients that are super hard to find or use, and the recipes are for dishes I would actually eat or feed to my guests.

All too often, I come across a cookbook with a beautiful cover but full of recipes that are way out of my league. Since I’m being more intentional about what I own, I made sure to go with a book that would actually be used. I’ve been thinking about sharing any good recipes I find here on the blog, y’all will have to let me know if that’s something you’re interested in. Right now, my goal is to test out a new recipe each week, but it might become more frequent as I get a little more comfortable in my kitchen.

Along with making this goal to make more home cooked meals, I’ve also decided to eliminate the majority of animal products from my diet. I already gave up milk a couple years ago and switched to almond milks instead, but I’ve still been consuming other dairy products as well as meat. I’ve been watching food documentaries on Netflix, specifically Forks Over Knives, and the research I’m seeing on the effects of animal products to our bodies is absolutely alarming. I’m already not a huge fan of pork and red meat, so that won’t be difficult to give up. Chicken, on the other hand, will be slightly more of a challenge, but I’m willing to go without if it means my body will be healthier and less likely to get cancer and other horrible diseases.

If you guys have any recipes or cookbooks you guys recommend for plant-based, whole food diets, definitely let me know! They don’t have to be entirely animal-free, so long as it’s an ingredient I can switch out for something else (i.e. oil for applesauce, mayonnaise for mashed avocado, etc). I think the meal I’m most concerned about is breakfast since I’d usually have yogurt or a cheese omelette, so feel free to spam me with your early morning recipes! 🙂
