20 Tips For Clearer Skin

While my skin is by no means severely acne prone, I do struggle with an acne flare up every so often. When these moments occur, I’m quick to act so my skin can heal as quickly as possible. I’ve noticed, over the years, that certain things help (and hinder) the quality of my complexion, and decide whether it’s fresh and glowing or dull and bumpy. Today, I thought I would share 20 of my best tips for keeping your skin clearer, healthier, and less likely to breakout.

  1. Stick to a gentle yet effective skincare routine
  2. NEVER go to bed without taking your makeup off first
  3. Regularly wash your makeup brushes and sponges
  4. Try not to touch your face throughout the day unless you absolutely have to (bacteria and dirt from your hands can get on your face and clog pores, resulting in breakouts)
  5. Don’t over wash or harshly scrub your face
  6. Make sure to always keep your hair clean – excess oils from your strands can cause breakouts around your hairline
  7. Regularly change your pillowcases (oils, dirt, and bacteria from your hair can build up on the fabric over time, causing breakouts while you sleep)
  8. Gently exfoliate your face at least twice a week to remove dead skin buildup
  9. Limit your intake of greasy foods and sugar
  10. Once or twice a week, use a clay face mask to draw out any impurities from your pores
  11. Instead of picking at a newly formed pimple (which can result in acne scarring), apply a bit of tea tree oil for a natural spot treatment to quickly dry it up
  12. Another way to minimize a breakout is by rubbing an ice cube over the area for a couple minutes – the ice helps relieve redness and swelling
  13. Exercise for at least 15 minutes a day to help promote healthy skin (and to sweat out any toxins)
  14. Keep your skin hydrated by using daily moisturizers, face oils, hydrating serums, and night creams
  15. Learn which skin type you have so you can properly treat and care for it
  16. On the days when you don’t wash your hair, go to bed with it up in a bun or braid so you’re not sleeping with dirty hair on your face
  17. Make sure to get plenty of sleep (it’s called “beauty sleep” for a reason)
  18. If you’re prone to breakouts, opt for mineral makeup as this is kinder to your skin and won’t clog your pores like oil-based makeups will
  19. Throw away old makeup and beauty products that are past their expiration date
  20. Caffeine can trigger breakouts, so try to limit (or eliminate) your intake
