The changing of the seasons calls for a change to our beauty habits as well. Gone are the days of perfecting our faux tans and achieving beauty waves that would make a mermaid envious. Instead, we’re moving our focus towards glossy hair, darker colors, and the never ending battle against dry winter skin. With all of the changing up of beauty routines, here are a few mistakes you definitely want to avoid for a more glamorous A/W season.
Forgetting To Exfoliate + Moisturize
Just because bathing suit season is over doesn’t mean you can stop worrying about regular exfoliating. Cold autumn weather, snowy winter days, and dry indoor heating wreak havoc on our skin, causing it to dry out easily and become itchy. It’s very important to exfoliate once or twice a week (depending on how dry your skin naturally is), and don’t forget to moisturize! During the seasons when my skin gets even more dry than usual, I like using thick creams and body butters because they last longer and offer up more hydration than lotions.
Wearing Too Many Dark Shades At Once
I’m as big a fan of dark makeup for autumn as the next girl, but I definitely think you can have too much of a good thing. In my opinion, the best way to wear your favorite fall shades is by picking one or two for each of your makeup looks. If you pile every dark shade on your face all at once, it’s going to look chaotic and messy. If you’ve got a gorgeous muddy plum lipstick, try pairing it with a simple cat eye. Smokey crimson eye? Go with a nude blush and something light and glossy on the lips.
Over-Styling With Heat
I know the thought of leaving the house with damp hair on a chilly day makes you cringe, but it’s better to give your hair a regular break from hair dryers and hot styling tools that to risk major damage to your tresses. If you simply must use heat to style your hair every morning, try waking up earlier so you can at least let it air dry instead of having to bust out the blow dryer. Also, invest in a good heat protectant spray so your locks don’t have to battle the flat iron alone.
Not Wearing Sunscreen
Just because the sun isn’t shining directly on your skin doesn’t mean it isn’t still doing damage. It’s been proven that harsh rays penetrate through on cloudy days, so keep using a daily moisturizer and foundation that has some SPF to it. Also, try to find a lip balm that has SPF as well – not only will this help protect the skin on your lips from sun damage, but it will also help with the dreaded chapped lips that seem to strike every winter.
