Why I Switched To Chemical Exfoliants
Ever since I started beauty blogging, my skincare routine has regularly changed. Whether it's new products hitting the market, forever being tempted by the products other bloggers use, or because new techniques and information are becoming available to us each year, my beauty routines rarely stay the same for long. One thing that has recently changed is that I made the switch to chemical exfoliants. When it comes to exfoliating the skin, there are two options to choose from - physical or chemical. Physical exfoliants are things like sugar scrubs, oatmeal masks, and sonic brushes, whereas chemical exfoliators slough away dead skin by using fruit acids and gentle chemicals. It might sound a bit scary to use chemical exfoliants, but there are actually some really good reasons why you should.
Gentler On The Skin
While the thought of having chemicals eat away at your dead skin might sound harsh, it's actually far gentler on your skin than using abrasive scrubs. Most physical exfoliators use large bits of crushed seeds and pits, which are actually horrible for your skin. While these may work at scrubbing away dead skin, they can also cause micro tears all over your skin that can take a long time to heal (yikes!). Once I found that out, I decided to give up my favorite scrubs in favor of glycolic toners and chemical peels. As long as you use them correctly (always follow the instructions!), chemical exfoliants can be way more effective and will give you much healthier skin.
Easy To Use
In my opinion, chemical toners are way easier to use than face scrubs. Not only are they less messy, but they also take way less time to apply. Instead of having to scrub my face and rinse it off, I just saturate a cotton round in some of Pixi's Glow Tonic* or The Ordinary's Glycolic Acid 7% Toning Solution and swipe it all over my face. It just takes a few seconds, and my face is exfoliated and ready for serums and moisturizers. I usually apply a chemical exfoliant before bed during my nighttime skincare routine and then wake up to fresh skin ready for some makeup!
A Better Glow
My absolute favorite thing about using chemical toners and peels is that my skin has never looked better! I constantly have a fresh, dewy glow, and have been able to go without foundation more than ever before. I've also noticed that my skincare products absorb quicker and my makeup applies so smoothly now. I love that I'm able to get away with just wearing a bit of concealer and setting powder, especially since it's summer. Without a doubt, switching to a chemical toner full time is the best skincare decision I've made in a long time.
