How To Keep A Clutter-Free Home

How To Keep A Clutter-Free Home | A Girl, Obsessed

Since I work from home, keeping my apartment tidy and clutter-free is super important. I'm naturally a messy person (especially when in the middle of working on a bunch of projects at once), which can definitely be a hindrance to my productivity (and sanity, haha). While working towards my goal of living a more minimal lifestyle this year, I've been picking up all kinds of tricks and little habits that have proved to be rather helpful. For the past few months I've been trying to focus on maintaining a clutter-free home. This used to be something that was extremely difficult for me, but through learning more about minimalism I've discovered a bunch of different things that help me get rid of clutter, keep things more organized, and break myself of my unnecessary shopping habits.

  • Plan regular "clean outs" to get rid of anything that either isn't being used, is old/broken, or can be donated to someone who could get more use out of it
  • Implement new habits tha promote clutter-free living (i.e. teach yourself to be more organized, remove any habits that have a negative impact like emotional hoarding or recreational shopping)
  • Don't purchase something if you already own one - you don't need two butter dishes, and you're never going to use that second throw blanket
  • Learn to say no to people when they try to unload items onto you that you don't need
  • Every time you bring something new into your home, make sure to get rid of something old
  • Let the size of your home dictate how much stuff you have, not the other way around
  • Make sure you have a dedicated place for every item you own (this comes in super handy when it's time to clean!)
  • Get into the habit of cleaning as you go rather than putting off chores until they all pile up
  • Go paperless with all of your bills and documents so you don't have papers and envelopes piling up everywhere
  • Take pictures of sentimental things you no longer have a use for - this way, you'll never forget them or the memory they embody, but they won't be collecting dust around your house
  • Unsubscribe from any magazines, newspapers, or letters you no longer need
  • Challenge yourself to a spending ban for a month - no purchases except for groceries and necessities
  • Regularly clean out your fridge and cupboards to keep them fresh and organized
  • Keep a "donate" box near your front door so when you find items you no longer need you can easily place them there and then they're ready to go the next time you leave
  • Always remind yourself to live within your means
  • If all else fails, watch a few episodes of Hoarders ;)
