Although winter is probably my favorite time for fashion, I've come to find that I actually don't need a ton of different pieces to have a stylish and versatile closet. Building a smaller wardrobe on a foundation of quality basics is super important because it allows you to spend less money in the long run, plus you can get more out of your clothes when each piece has been well thought out instead of just tossed in your shopping bag on a whim. When it comes to looking cute and staying warm this season, all you need to do is to focus on layering. With a handful of key style pieces, you can have a wardrobe that offers countless options and cute ways to experiment with your style.
Chunky Knit Sweaters
In my opinion, there is nothing better than a big chunky sweater on a cold winter day. They're just so cozy to wear, almost like walking around with a big blanket wrapped around you all day. There are so many different styles, colors, and materials used when it comes to sweaters, so you're sure to find at least a few that work well with your particular style. An added bonus is that a good sweater (when cared for properly) lasts for ages, so you'll get plenty of wear for your money.
Plain White Tees
Plain white t-shirts should definitely be a staple in everyones closet, no matter the time of the year. This basic layering piece is a versatile necessity - it can be worn alone, with another top layered underneath, or underneath a sweater, cardigan, or button down top. The best part? A simple white tee is usually super cheap, and you can stock up for the year for around $10 or less. I like to get the pack of white crewnecks in the mens department. They only cost $9 for 4 or 5 shirts, and they're super comfy to wear!
You don't have a complete wardrobe without at least one pair of good skinny jeans. I'm a huge fan of these for several reasons - they make you look slimmer, can be dressed up or down, and they're perfect for the winter because they tuck easily into boots and tall socks/leg warmers. My suggestion is to have a good "every day" pair that is super comfortable and works for any look, and then have a pair that is either dark wash or black for more classy occasions.
A good plaid shirt is a must for the fall/winter seasons. It has incredible layerability (yes I'm making up words, just go with it) - wear it over an old band t-shirt, layer it under your favorite sweater for some added warmth, or tie it around your waist for a nostalgic 90s grunge look. They even look great worn alone with a pair of leggings and some flats. They're definitely a clothing item that will never go out of style, so you can shop confidently knowing you'll be able to wear these tops for several years to come.
My final winter style staple is ankle boots! There are so many styles to choose from so you're definitely able to find a pair you love, and I honestly can't imagine a winter wardrobe without them. Ankle boots are incredibly comfortable while looking highly stylish, which is a combo hard to come by in the fashion world. You can find pairs that are a little more stylish and others that work better for everyday looks, it all depends on where you shop and what your tastes are.
